Haiku poetry day 2021

April 17th was National Haiku Poetry Day! (There’s a day for everything, right?)

As a part of the day’s celebratory events, The Haiku Foundation presented its 7th-annual HaikuLife Haiku Film Festival, which included four of my under-a-minute video poems.

You can find all 51 films from the 2021 festival here:

Mine appear toward the bottom under the section titled “Video Haiga” and include “Urban Canyon”, “Time and Clouds”, “Icicles”, and “Ghosts in Your Eyes”.  :- )

Zigzagging

This half-minute video poem is another in a series of cool collaborations between me and choreographer / dancer Charly Santagado of Mignolo Arts.

Once again, Charly’s interpretation of one of my micropoems employs her Movenglish® dance-language to show meaning in a way that lets viewers actually “read” the dance. We hope you enjoy it! :- )

Almost dawn

This half-minute video poem pushes poetry into the realm of dance, with choreographer / dancer Charly Santagado of Mignolo Arts!  :- D

Using her dance-language Movenglish, Charly interpreted my micropoem “Almost Dawn” and then filtered the footage into a grayscale animation.

The music we used is an interpretation too. I fed my poem into a language-to-music program and incorporated the resulting melody, which I fleshed out with bass and percussion loops.

We hope you enjoy it!

One last blossom

A video poem can’t fix the world, but maybe it can give us a moment’s respite from our concerns and refresh our spirits a little.

This collaboration between yoga powerhouse Kathy Uyen Nguyen and me is called “One Last Blossom”. We hope you enjoy it! :- )

Miniature Film Festival, 2019

My 34-second video poem “Mixed Signals” was shown yesterday evening at the 5th-annual Miniature Film Festival, in Vancouver!

The filmfest offered a program of 46 videos of 60 seconds or less on the theme of hope (broadly interpreted). “It was a fun time and the audience really enjoyed your films!” said MFF organizer Robert David Duncan.

So if you have half a minute, I invite you to take a look at my contribution to the event, “Mixed Signals” — a quick hit of poetry to amuse and (perhaps) intrigue you! To view the video, just click this link: https://vimeo.com/billwaters/videopoem03.  ;- )

Miniature Film Festival, 2018

My 28-second video tanka “First Crush” was chosen as an official selection at the 4th-annual Miniature Film Festival, in Vancouver!  :- D

The filmfest is presenting microshorts on the theme of love at a venue that seats . . . about 25 people. LOL! It’s a tiny festival with a whole lot of heart.  <3

This is the first film festival I’ve ever submitted a video to, and I’m delighted in a rather LARGE way to be a part of it.  ;- )
